About the Team
Glendora Aquatics is a year around swim club in Southern California, practicing at the Glendora High School pool. We are governed by United States Swimming (USS) and Southern California Swimming (SCS). Glendora Aquatics has a strong focus on guiding our swimmers through competitive swimming while creating lasting friendships. Our coaching staff values the importance of implementing a team-oriented environment for our swimmers to grow in life first, and the pool second.
Our hope is that our team learns values such as leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship, and friendship. Glendora Aquatics focuses on creating a strong knowledge of the sport while also cultivating a fun team environment. Learn more about our coaching staff below!
Coaching Philosophy
Quality + Quantity
I believe in “Quality and Quantity”. Putting in yardage and hours of training has proven to be successful; however, I also believe that the yardage has to have a quality component. The yardage must develop both the swimmer’s technique and racing performance while not breaking them down physically or emotionally. Therefore, swim sets need to develop proper technique and conditioning. Many swimmers discontinue swimming due to monotony and non-purposeful laps. I strive on providing creative training plans that allow athletes to perform their best. I believe in using dry land training to compliment the movement that swimmers make in all the competitive strokes, but not to tear them down where they have difficulty maintain proper technique.
Motivation
I was once told that swimming is 90% mental and 10% physical; I believe this to be absolutely true. I have had athletes who were physically capable of achieving great performances yet when faced with the pressure of a championship setting they were unable to perform to their potential. I incorporate mental training and coach with a positive mental attitude to help my swimmers develop their mental toughness as well as their physical toughness in workouts. Motivational techniques, mental preparation, and a positive mental attitude are a huge part of the success of a swimmer. Teaching athletes how to visualize their goals and mentally walk through their races while providing them with the positive encouragement to attain those goals is another component necessary to a swimmers success.
Goal Setting
Goals are essential to allow athletes to pursue targets in training and competition. Working towards something allows the swimmer to create the strong drive needed to succeed. I believe it is important to sit with each of my swimmers and create realistic, attainable goals and track their progress. I also created a top 10 record board which helps motivate athletes to improve their times so they can see their name up on the top 10. For some athletes the school record was not achievable, but achieving the top 10 time is.
Team
The team is bigger than the individual. I take pride in the ability to take swimmers from all ability levels and different swimming backgrounds and turning them into one united team. They come in as individuals and leave as a family. This is achieved through social activities, creating common goals, and utilizing each individual to suit the best need for the team. Every swimmer needs to feel they are part of the team. A swimmer will then feel they are part of a social network and feel more confident and supported by others.
